Often children with ADHD are misdiagnosed and suffer from lack of sleep, poor sleep quality, and
sleep obstructed breathing. ADHA is a serious diagnosis and according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2017, about 6.4 million children, or one out of every 10 children ages 4 to 17 in the U.S. have been diagnosed with ADHD.
Sleep-disordered breathing is the most common symptom of ADHD. Science has known for years that inadequate sleep can create symptoms of ADHD.
ADHD is linked to a variety of sleep problems. Children with ADHD have higher rates of daytime sleepiness than children without ADHD. Half of all children with ADHD have signs of sleep-disordered breathing compared to only 25% of children without ADHD.
Mouth breathing is likely to cause sleep disorders during the night. Daytime mouth breathing may contribute to symptoms similar to ADHD symptoms. Breathing through the mouth instead of the nose can affect brain function negatively. To allow for nasal breathing, lips must be closed at all times unless you or your child is speaking, eating, or yawning.
Sleep-disordered breathing can be treated with Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy by retraining the muscles of the tongue, lips, and cheeks and referrals can be suggested for further evaluation for enlarged tonsils/adenoids and or tongue tie.
